My local beach, just south of the tow pound at Pier 76, is my favourite in Manhattan. It may be just a rubbish-strewn, sitting-room-sized spit of sand, but it's mine. Strangely, no-one else seems willing to slither past the roadside rail and ramble down the rocks and over ankle-breaking obstacles to bathe his senses in the restorative Hudson. I am willing.
